Porta San Giovanni is the main gate in the walls of San Gimignano, notable for its impressive structure. Finished in 1262, it historically marked the entrance for travelers from Siena along the Via Francigena. The gate exhibits a Sienese-style lowered arch and an overhanging guardroom, elegantly supported by decorative corbels and trilobate arches. Visitors can also explore the remnants of the chapel of Madonna dei Lumi and the square of Martiri di Montemaggio nearby. Its historical and architectural importance makes it a highlight in San Gimignano.
