Elagabalium - Free Audio Guide

Elagabalium, erected by Emperor Elagabalus in the early 3rd century AD, was a temple dedicated to the sun god El-Gabal. Situated on the Palatine Hill, it became a focal point for the controversial worship of 'Deus Sol Invictus', reflecting the cultural fusion of Roman and Syrian beliefs. Visitors can view the temple's remains, which include a large terrace and a few standing columns, showcasing ancient Roman architecture. The site lies adjacent to the Church of San Sebastiano and offers impressive views of the Colosseum. Admission is free, and the site is open to the public. General visiting hours are from 9 AM to sunset. Although the temple is in ruins, the surrounding area is rich in archaeological importance.
