Chater Garden (遮打花園) is a modest public garden in the Central area of Hong Kong Island, named after Sir Paul Chater, a notable colonial-era businessman and philanthropist. Laid out as an urban green space in the early 20th century, it holds historical significance within the city’s civic fabric and has long been a venue for cultural activities, community meetings and political gatherings. Visitors find landscaped lawns, mature trees, shaded promenades and a small pavilion-like feature, set against nearby civic and commercial buildings that illustrate Hong Kong’s layered development. As a municipal park it is generally open during daylight hours and is customarily free to enter; level paths and proximate transport links aid accessibility, while ongoing care retains its cultural and communal importance in the financial centre.
