Aya İrini (Hagia Irene) is a historic Byzantine church situated in the outer courtyard of Topkapı Palace in Istanbul. Its origins date to a 4th‑century foundation with a principal reconstruction under Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, making it one of the city’s earliest and most important churches, dedicated to Holy Peace. Unusually after 1453 it was not converted into a mosque and later functioned as an imperial armory and museum space. Architecturally it marries a basilica plan with a central dome; preserved structural elements, mosaic fragments and carved stonework reflect successive restorations and illuminate Byzantine liturgical and architectural practice. The site is of pronounced cultural and historical significance and is occasionally used for concerts that take advantage of its acoustics. General visiting arrangements follow museum norms; admission is generally modest and accessibility within the palace grounds may be limited by steps.
