Tekfur Sarayı, commonly known as the Palace of the Porphyrogenitus, is a late Byzantine palace in the Blachernae quarter of Istanbul, sited beside the north‑western section of the city walls with views over the Golden Horn. Probably dating to the late 13th–14th centuries and linked to the Palaiologan dynasty, it ranks among the best‑preserved Byzantine secular buildings in the city. The edifice displays typical brick‑and‑stone coursing, blind arcades, decorated window surrounds and multi‑storey halls; fragments of mural painting and carved stonework survive internally. Over time the complex accommodated varied functions under Ottoman rule, illustrating the stratified urban history of Istanbul. Its cultural importance lies in its architectural merit, its place within the defensive and ceremonial topography of late Byzantium, and its witness to the metropolis’s enduring historical change.
