The Cathedral of Saint Nicolo di Bari, situated in the picturesque Cathedral Square in Taormina, is a significant historical and religious landmark. Founded in the 13th century, this exquisite example of Sicilian-Gothic architecture is popularly known as the "Cathedral Fortress" due to its distinctive battlements. Inside, one can admire the beautiful pink marble columns and remarkable artworks, including a painting of the Visitation by Antonio Giuffrè and a polyptych by Antonello de Saliba. In 1980, the church was granted the status of Minor Basilica by Pope John Paul II. It is open to visitors daily, free of charge, ensuring accessibility for everyone. The cathedral also acts as a vibrant hub for the local community, hosting various cultural events throughout the year.
