The High Line is an elevated linear park on Manhattan’s West Side created on a preserved 1930s freight rail viaduct. Converted through a community‑led preservation movement and opened in phases from 2009, it exemplifies adaptive reuse and contemporary landscape design by teams including James Corner Field Operations, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, with planting schemes by Piet Oudolf. Running roughly from Gansevoort Street toward 34th Street through Chelsea and Hudson Yards, the route offers sculptural planting beds, rotating public art, engineered viewing platforms and framed vistas of the city and the Hudson. Its cultural importance stems from urban regeneration, community activism and the blending of art, ecology and design. The High Line is publicly accessible without a general admission fee, operates seasonally with variable hours, and includes multiple ADA‑accessible entrances and facilities.
