The Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, unveiled in 1893 at Piccadilly Circus in central London, commemorates the Victorian philanthropist Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. Sculpted by Alfred Gilbert, the winged figure popularly called “Eros” was intended as Anteros, a symbol of selfless love; the figure was among the first public statues cast in aluminium.
