Byland Abbey is a historic ruined abbey situated in the village of Byland with Wass, North Yorkshire. Established in 1135 as a Savigniac abbey, it transitioned to become part of the Cistercian order in 1147. The abbey is celebrated for its impressive architecture, notably its 12th-century church, which gained fame for sheep rearing and wool exports. Recognized as ‘one of the three shining lights of the north’, it holds significant medieval historical value. Visitors can admire the extensive ruins, including the notable Rose Window and the ghost tales documented in medieval manuscripts.
