The Markt, sometimes referred to as the "Grote Markt," is the main square in Brugge, Belgium. Spanning approximately 1 hectare, it is surrounded by historic architecture, prominently featuring the 12th-century Belfry. The square has an extensive history, attracting visitors since the 10th century and hosting its first international fair around 1200. Today, it serves as a lively marketplace with various events, a weekly market every Wednesday morning, and a festive Christmas market complete with an ice rink. The area is pedestrian-friendly, facilitating easy access to surrounding cafes, restaurants, and shops. Entry to the square is free, while there may be a fee to climb the Belfry. Additionally, the statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck stands as a tribute to local heroes from the early 14th century.
