Yedikule Fortress (Yedikule Zindanları) is a fortified complex in Istanbul centred on the section of the Theodosian Walls associated with the historic Golden Gate; its distinctive ensemble of seven towers reflects Byzantine origins and later Ottoman reconfigurations. Originally forming part of the city’s land defences, the site was adapted after the Ottoman conquest for roles including imperial treasury, armaments store and a state prison that held prominent detainees, leaving a strong imprint on collective memory and national heritage. The complex’s architectural layers, masonry details and surviving cells recount episodes of political detention alongside military and administrative functions. Key attractions include the towers, the defensive walls and the visible traces of historic use, often interpreted on-site. Visiting arrangements, admission and accessibility provisions are set by site authorities and may change; broadly the monument is presented for interpretation with on-site access and explanatory information.
