The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) in Istanbul is a major historic covered market originating in the mid‑15th century after the Ottoman conquest. Over the centuries it evolved into an extensive commercial and social complex, connecting local craftspeople, merchants and international traders; it has been restored and enlarged repeatedly following fires and earthquakes. Its architecture shows Ottoman and earlier influences, composed of a maze of covered avenues, inner courtyards, caravanserai‑like hans and decorated gates. Notable features include traditional jewellery and textile workshops, leather and carpet sellers, antique stalls, small mosques and historic fountains integrated in the market fabric. The bazaar typically operates during daytime on most days and imposes no general entrance charge; individual shops determine prices. Accessibility is uneven: some sections provide level access or ramps while older alleys may have steps and irregular paving.
