Şerefiye Sarnıcı (frequently called the Theodosius Cistern) is a Byzantine‑period underground reservoir on Istanbul’s historic peninsula, originally built to serve the city. Its vaulted chambers, orderly rows of columns and carved capitals demonstrate medieval engineering and urban utility; subsequent Ottoman use and recent restoration have added historical layers. The cistern holds cultural significance as a tangible witness to Constantinople/Istanbul’s continuous urban and technological legacy. Principal attractions include the atmospheric columned halls, decorative capitals and shallow reflecting pools, highlighted by lighting and interpretive displays, and its proximity to the Sultanahmet ensemble. Visiting hours are typically in daytime with seasonal variation; entry usually involves a modest admission charge or may be covered by some museum passes. Accessibility is limited in places: steps and uneven floors can restrict wheelchair access, though some adaptations were made during restoration.
