Place d'Armes, Vieux-Montréal, Ville-Marie, Montréal, Agglomération de Montréal, Montréal (région administrative), Québec, H2Y 2W7, Canada
Place d'Armes in Old Montreal is one of the city’s oldest public squares, originally established as a military parade ground and civic gathering place during the colonial era. Framed by landmark architecture—the neo‑Gothic Notre‑Dame Basilica, the historic Bank of Montreal building, the Aldred Building and other heritage façades—the square centres on a prominent commemorative monument to Montreal’s founder and serves as a focal point for local history and public memory. Its cultural significance lies in the layering of Indigenous, French and later anglophone and immigrant histories visible in the urban fabric, monuments and surrounding institutions. As an outdoor urban plaza it is generally open to the public without formal admission and is accessible at street level, with nearby public‑transport connections and pedestrian links to the rest of Old Montreal. The site attracts interest for its historic architecture, public art and role in the city’s ceremonial life.
