Fatih Mosque in Istanbul’s Fatih district was commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II after the 1453 conquest of Constantinople and first built in the 15th century as the centre of an imperial külliye. The complex historically housed a medrese, library, charitable kitchens and the tomb of Mehmed II; across centuries earthquakes and rebuilding have reshaped it, and the present mosque largely reflects later reconstruction phases. As a major example of Ottoman imperial architecture, it holds significant cultural and religious importance, combining a monumental dome and minarets with interior decorative features and imperial mausolea. Key points of interest include the courtyard, the main prayer hall, the mausolea and remains of the külliye. The mosque is generally open to visitors outside prayer times, often without a substantial admission charge; accessibility can be limited by historic steps and uneven surfaces, although some accommodations may be provided.
