Kastraki, a charming village in Greece's Thessaly region, is situated close to the remarkable Meteora rock formations. Home to a population of 1,023, the village reflects its Byzantine heritage, with its name derived from the Greek term for castle, linked to a medieval fortress constructed by Andronikos Palaiologos. Highlights include the monasteries perched on steep cliffs, an expansive network of hiking trails, and local tavernas offering traditional dishes. Kastraki is conveniently reached by a short stroll from Kalabaka and makes for an excellent base for exploration. Visiting hours differ by monastery, and while entry is usually free, contributions are welcomed.
