Adalar, İstanbul, Marmara Bölgesi, Türkiye
The Adalar (Prince's Islands) are a group of nine largely car‑free islands in the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul. Historically used as places of exile during Byzantine times and later as Ottoman summer retreats, the islands retain well‑preserved wooden villas, monasteries and a multi‑layered religious and cultural heritage reflecting Greek, Armenian, Jewish and Turkish communities. Principal attractions include the larger islands Büyükada and Heybeliada with pine‑wooded hills, seaside promenades, historic houses, the Aya Yorgi hill and the Halki theological school, together with quieter bays and beaches. Access is by sea; the islands are predominantly pedestrian with bicycles and restricted vehicles, and many historic routes are steep or cobbled. Museums and historic sites have their own opening hours and admission arrangements; accessibility differs by site.
