Sultanahmet Camii, commonly known as the Blue Mosque, is an early 17th‑century Ottoman imperial mosque in Istanbul’s Sultanahmet quarter. Commissioned by Sultan Ahmed I and designed by Sedefkar Mehmed Agha, it was completed between 1609 and 1616 and is renowned for its classical Ottoman design, a vast central dome, six elegant minarets and the interior’s rich blue Iznik tile decoration. The mosque continues to function as a place of worship and stands as a key emblem of Istanbul’s Byzantine and Ottoman heritage, facing the historic Hagia Sophia. Highlights include the tiled prayer hall, mihrab, minbar, the spacious courtyard and the striking exterior profile. Visitors may enter outside prayer times; there is generally no fixed admission fee, and accessibility is limited in parts due to steps and floor coverings, with arrangements to assist when possible.
