Temple Bar is a historic ceremonial gateway marking the traditional boundary between the City of London and the City of Westminster. Originating in the medieval period, the gateway functioned as the City’s formal entrance and as the place where royal proclamations and civic ceremonies took place. The decorative stone arch visible today comes from a later reconstruction linked to the post‑Great Fire rebuilding; it was removed in the 19th century and later reinstated in central London as a free‑standing monument. Located within the legal quarter near the Inns of Court and adjacent to Temple Church and Fleet Street, Temple Bar embodies legal, civic and cultural traditions. As an outdoor monument it is generally open to the public without an admission charge; interpretive signage explains its history. The site is mostly at street level, but historic surfaces around it can be uneven and may impede some mobility needs.
