Porta Romana is a historic gateway in Siena, built between 1327 and 1328 by architects Agnolo di Ventura and Agostino di Giovanni. Renowned for its impressive crenellated roof and machicolation, the gate features two distinct portals and an inner courtyard with arrowslits, highlighting its defensive role. The outer portal displays a bas-relief of the IHS Christogram, adding to its cultural importance. The inner portal is home to a Madonna icon created by Taddeo di Bartolo in 1417, which was later retouched by notable artists, showcasing its significance to the city's history. Due to decay, the fresco has been transferred to the Basilica of San Francesco.
