Chora (Kariye Camii), in Istanbul’s Edirnekapı district, is a monument of layered history: originally a Byzantine church, it was substantially rebuilt and elaborately decorated in the 11th and especially the 14th century under patronage linked to Theodore Metochites. Its cultural importance derives from exceptionally well‑preserved late Byzantine mosaics and frescoes — narrative cycles portraying the life of Christ and the Virgin, a prominent Deesis and a Christ Pantokrator — considered masterpieces of the Palaeologan Renaissance. The architecture combines a domed core, an ornate narthex, and refined marble and stone decoration. Its institutional status has changed over centuries (church, mosque, museum and, since 2020, once more a mosque), affecting access and interpretation; visiting hours, admission and arrangements have therefore varied. The monument is significant for Byzantine studies and for the Ottoman engagement with Byzantine art; access can be limited by worship and conservation activity.
