The Castell de Montjuïc is a historic military fortress on Montjuïc hill in Barcelona, with origins in the 17th century and later 18th‑century rebuilding that produced its present star‑shaped defences. Historically a strategic fortification and subsequently a military prison, it became a potent symbol of political repression — notably the 1940 execution of Catalan president Lluís Companys — and now functions as a civic museum and place of remembrance. Principal attractions comprise bastions and ramparts, historic artillery and fortified architecture, exhibitions interpreting military and municipal history, and extensive views over the city and harbour. The site carries cultural significance as a locus of memory, education and occasional cultural programming. It is generally open to the public with routine visiting hours, a modest admission policy, and some accessible facilities, although outdoor gradients and certain sections may restrict full mobility access.
