Rumeli Hisarı (Rumelian Fortress) is a 15th-century Ottoman fortress on the European shore of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, built in 1452 by Sultan Mehmed II as part of preparations for the 1453 conquest of Constantinople. Its three main towers, curtain walls and commanding position opposite the older Anadolu Hisarı demonstrate its military and architectural significance in controlling passage through the strait. The ensemble comprises conserved fortifications, cannon embrasures and interpretive displays that relate its historical function, while offering prominent views over the Bosphorus. General practical information: the site is open to the public during daytime with seasonal hours, usually involves a modest admission fee or inclusion on some museum schemes, and provides only partial accessibility owing to steps, narrow walkways and uneven surfaces. Conservation work and research highlight its cultural role in Ottoman expansion and Istanbul’s development.
