Burgplatz in Düsseldorf is a historic riverside square in the Altstadt, formed during early urban growth and named after the medieval burg that later became the Düsseldorf Palace; the remaining Schlossturm houses a shipping museum. The square was substantially enlarged in the late nineteenth century when palace remnants were removed and was reshaped again in the 1990s during a Rhine‑front renewal that highlighted a broad riverside staircase and promenade. Key attractions comprise the Schlossturm with maritime exhibits, the Radschlägerbrunnen celebrating a local folk custom, sculptural installations such as the Stadterhebungsmonument and the Dusselgitter, together with adjacent historic streets and riverside terraces. Burgplatz holds cultural importance as a centre of Düsseldorf’s history and civic life. It links the Altstadt to the Rhine promenade and features pedestrianised areas, stepped accesses and ramps within the riverside setting.
