The Binbirdirek Cistern (Binbirdirek Sarnıcı), often linked with the historic Cistern of Philoxenos, is a Byzantine subterranean water reservoir in Istanbul. Built to supply the city, it displays successive rows of stone columns, vaulted arches and worked capitals that demonstrate historic building techniques. During Byzantine and Ottoman eras it served as essential infrastructure and subsequently entered the city’s cultural patrimony, appreciated for revealing Istanbul’s multiple historical layers. Principal points of interest are the repetitive colonnades, sculptural capitals and the subdued, evocative interior atmosphere that together communicate the scale of former water systems. The cistern is conserved and interpreted for visitors; general arrangements comprise routine opening periods, a modest admission charge and partial accessibility measures limited by conservation needs.
