Istanbul Archaeology Museums are a group of three closely linked institutions—the Archaeology Museum, the Museum of the Ancient Orient and the Tiled Kiosk Museum—located near Topkapı Palace in Istanbul’s historic Sultanahmet quarter. Founded in the late nineteenth century under the direction of Osman Hamdi Bey and housed in a notable building by architect Alexandre Vallaury (completed 1891), the complex preserves an extensive collection covering prehistoric Anatolia, the ancient Near East, Classical Greek and Roman periods and later ages. Highlights include the Alexander Sarcophagus, an early diplomatic treaty, and many funerary monuments and sculptures excavated throughout Anatolia. The museums play a central role in Turkish cultural heritage, archaeological research and public scholarship. The site maintains scheduled public opening hours, charges admission, and offers visitor facilities with some accessibility provisions, though historic structures may limit mobility.
