Place Al-Mouahidine in central Ouarzazate (ورزازات), often called the "Gateway to the Sahara", functions as the historic and cultural core of the town. The surrounding architecture combines traditional Moroccan design and more recent influences, bearing the imprint of Berber and Arab communities across centuries. Historically used as a communal meeting place and market, the plaza has hosted social gatherings, trade and performances of music and dance that sustain regional traditions. It remains a vibrant centre of artisans selling textiles, ceramics, spices and traditional dress, and of cafés serving tagines and mint tea. Notable features include photogenic façades, open terraces and regular cultural presentations that illustrate local customs. The square encapsulates Ouarzazate’s position as a junction between desert tracks and mountain settlements, offering insight into southern Moroccan history and identity.
