Fairfax House is an exceptional Georgian townhouse situated in York. Constructed in the early 1740s for a local merchant, it was remodeled by the architect John Carr in 1761. The house boasts stunning mid-18th century plasterwork and an impressive collection of Georgian furniture, recognized as one of the finest in Europe. Following a period of disrepair and varied uses, it was restored by York Civic Trust in the 1980s and now serves as a museum for public enjoyment. Guests can discover its meticulously preserved rooms and significant artworks, including a recently acquired portrait of Elizabeth Clifford, wife of the last Viscount Fairfax.
