Piazza Anfiteatro, San Concordio, Lucca, Toscana, 55100, Italia
Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is a historic square in Lucca, Italy, built upon the remains of a Roman amphitheater from the 2nd century AD, giving it an elliptical shape. The square emerged during the medieval period, originally termed "parlascio," and has served diverse functions, including as a salt store and a prison. In the 1800s, architect Lorenzo Nottolini undertook redevelopment, clearing away buildings and creating the "via dell'anfiteatro" to follow the amphitheater's original outline. Now, it hosts numerous shops and a market, elevated around 3 meters above the ancient arena. Access is via four arched gates, with one mimicking the original entrance. A notable cross can be found at the center, where the gates intersect.
