Aydos (Aetos) Kalesi is a hilltop fortress near Istanbul with origins in the Byzantine era and later Ottoman repairs, positioned to oversee approaches across the adjacent plain. Historically it functioned as a defensive stronghold and observation post, and its situation influenced local strategic and settlement patterns. Remaining features include sections of curtain wall, fragments of towers, cisterns and gateworks within a largely ruinous but atmospheric landscape; the remains and the views contribute to the site’s cultural importance and regional identity. The castle is tied to local history and folklore and conservation work has focused on stabilisation and interpretation rather than full reconstruction. Terrain is natural and uneven so accessibility is restricted in parts; visiting is generally by day and any admission tends to be modest; facilities on site are limited.
