Fonte Gaia is a monumental fountain situated in Siena's main square, Piazza del Campo. It was inaugurated in 1346 and became the most important public fountain in the city, gaining the name "Gaia" from the joy it brought citizens at its unveiling. The fountain features elaborate sculptures by Jacopo della Quercia, finished in 1419, with the originals now housed in the Museo di Santa Maria della Scala. Visitors can appreciate the intricate decorative elements depicting biblical tales and symbolic figures, all crafted from local marble. Fonte Gaia is a testament to Siena's rich artistic history and an integral part of its cultural identity.
