The Joto Myodai, situated in Chiyoda, Tokyo, is a historic lantern tower constructed in 1871 as a memorial for the souls enshrined at Yasukuni Shrine. Rising to a height of 16.8 metres, it showcases a combination of Western and Japanese architectural styles, symbolising a significant cultural shift in Japan. Initially placed near Kudansaka, it was moved in 1930 due to road widening. Visitors can appreciate its distinctive design and understand its role as a navigational aid for fishing vessels in Tokyo Bay. The site is open all year round and free to enter, making it a wonderful destination for history buffs and tourists alike.
