Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi) is a medieval stone tower in Istanbul’s Galata quarter, constructed by Genoese settlers in the mid‑14th century as part of harbour fortifications and later altered during Ottoman restorations. Historically serving as a watchtower and fire lookout, it has become a lasting emblem of the city and is linked to cultural tales such as the alleged flight of Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi. The tower’s Romanesque form and later roof additions reveal a layered history; interior displays explain its past while upper levels offer wide panoramic views over the Golden Horn and the historic peninsula. Principal attractions include the observation deck, historical exhibits and dining spaces near the summit. The site is open to visitors during regular opening hours with an admission charge; seasonal variations influence access and there are accessibility provisions, although some parts lack full step‑free access.
