Eyüp Sultan Mezarlığı, in Istanbul’s Eyüp district beside the historic Eyüp Sultan complex on the Golden Horn, is a centuries‑old cemetery centred on the tomb of Abu Ayyub al‑Ansari (locally Eyüp Sultan), a revered companion of the Prophet. Established in the early Ottoman era and expanded across later centuries, the burial ground became the resting place for Ottoman notables, scholars and officials and showcases Ottoman funerary architecture, mausolea and elaborately carved gravestones. It is culturally important as a site of pilgrimage, remembrance and ritual life within the city. Principal features include the tomb complex, historic mausoleums and terraced cemeteries with views over the Golden Horn. The complex follows set visiting periods and religious timetables; access to the open cemetery is typically free, while some enclosed tombs or chambers may require restricted admission or customary contributions. Many paths are steep or stepped, limiting accessibility in parts.
