Situated in Istanbul's historic Sultanahmet quarter, the Sultanahmet Camii (commonly called the Blue Mosque) is an Ottoman imperial mosque completed during the reign of Sultan Ahmed I in the early seventeenth century as a statement of piety and architectural intent. Designed by Sedefkar Mehmet Agha, it is notable for its tiered domes, six elegant minarets and an interior adorned with thousands of hand-painted Iznik tiles in blue and floral motifs. The mosque engages in a significant architectural and symbolic dialogue with the nearby Hagia Sophia, demonstrating a fusion of Byzantine spatial concepts and classical Ottoman detailing. As an active house of worship, visitor access is organised around prayer times; admission has traditionally been without a fixed ticket charge, and accessibility varies across parts of the complex, with steps, ramps and measures to support visitors with mobility requirements.
