The Gasteig, located on the eastern banks of the Isar River in Munich, is one of Europe's largest cultural centers. Opened in 1985, it houses the Philharmonie concert hall, the Munich Philharmonic, the Munich City Library, and various event spaces. The center has a rich history, initially conceived after WWII to replace lost cultural venues.
