Caffè Le Giubbe Rosse is a historic café located in Piazza della Repubblica, Florence, Italy. Founded in 1897, it was initially established as the "birreria Reininghaus" by German brothers who were beer producers. The café's name, which translates to "The Red Jackets," comes from the attire worn by its waitstaff, inspired by the Viennese café culture.
Le Giubbe Rosse has played a significant role in Florence's intellectual and artistic scene, serving as a gathering spot for prominent figures such as Vladimir Lenin, poets, and artists during the early 20th century. It became particularly important during the Futurism movement, hosting vibrant literary and artistic discussions. Over the years, it has been frequented by notable personalities, including Giovanni Papini and Eugenio Montale.
Despite its rich history, the café faced financial difficulties and was declared bankrupt in December 2018. It was rescued by Scudieri International Srl in July 2019, and after renovations, it reopened in June 2024. The café is recognized as a cultural landmark, reflecting the intellectual fervor of 20th-century Florence, and remains a testament to the city’s literary heritage. Visitors can enjoy its unique atmosphere and historical significance while savoring a coffee in this storied venue.
