The Flavio Gioia monument, restored in June 2022, features a bronze sculpture depicting Flavio Gioia, an Italian navigator traditionally believed to have invented the compass during the 13th or 14th century. Created by the artist Alfonso Balzico, the monument was awarded a gold medal at the 1900 Universal Expo in Paris and was finally placed in its current location overlooking the Sea of Amalfi 30 years later. Although historical evidence casts doubt on the existence of Gioia, Amalfi played a crucial role in the history of navigation, particularly in the use of the magnetic needle. Visitors can appreciate its cultural significance and the panoramic views from the piazza.
