Campo de l'Abazia is a quiet square in the northern Cannaregio district of Venice, historically linked to the Confraternity (Scuola) della Misericordia. According to tradition, the confraternity established a church and its first scuola on the site as early as 936 C.E.; by the 13th century its growth led to construction of the larger Scuola Grande della Misericordia, which remains one of the more imposing historic buildings in the city. The campo and its buildings reflect Venice’s civic and charitable traditions, the role of lay confraternities in social welfare, and layers of architectural history. Key attractions include the church, the grand scuola façade and interiors with historic decoration and art associated with the Misericordia. Visiting hours and public access vary with season and management; some areas have traditionally been open without charge while special interiors or exhibitions may involve admission. Because of the age and fabric of the site, step‑free access is limited and accessibility is partial.
