Plaza Nueva, also known as Plaza Barria, is a monumental Neoclassical square in Bilbao, constructed in 1821. Its name reflects its distinction from the previous Plaza Vieja. The square is surrounded by arcaded buildings and features traditional taverns, restaurants, and souvenir shops. It serves as a vibrant cultural hub, hosting a flea market each Sunday and various folk demonstrations and festivals throughout the year. Plaza Nueva was historically significant as the site of the Biscay government until 1890 and now houses Euskaltzaindia, the Royal Academy of the Basque Language. Visitors can enjoy free Wi-Fi provided by the Bilbao City Council while experiencing the lively atmosphere of this iconic location.
