The Gedenksteen voor het voormalig Huis van Bewaring, also known as the 4 May Memorial, is located in Amsterdam-Centrum at Max Euweplein. Designed by architect Pieter Zaanen and unveiled on May 4, 1992, this granite monument commemorates the victims of oppression during the Second World War. The artwork features a split boulder with a polished inscription by Richter Roegholt that reflects on crime, freedom, and the pursuit of an open city. Visitors can pay respects and reflect on the historical significance of the site, which was formerly the location of the House of Detention I, used by the Nazis during the war. The site is free to visit and is accessible to all.
