Aya İrini (Hagia Irene) is a historic Byzantine church located within the outer courtyard of Topkapı Palace in Istanbul. Its origins trace to a 4th‑century foundation with a major reconstruction under Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, making it one of the city’s earliest and most significant churches dedicated to Holy Peace. Unusually for the period after 1453, it was not converted into a mosque and later served as an imperial armory and museum space. Architecturally it combines a basilica plan with a central dome; surviving structural elements, fragments of mosaic and carved stonework reflect successive restorations and give insight into Byzantine liturgy and building practice. The site has strong cultural and historical significance and is sometimes used for musical performances that exploit its acoustics. General visitor arrangements follow standard museum practice; admission is typically modest and accessibility within the palace grounds may be limited by steps.
