Tekfur Sarayı, commonly known as the Palace of the Porphyrogenitus, is a late Byzantine palace in the Blachernae quarter of Istanbul, situated beside the northwestern section of the city walls overlooking the Golden Horn. Likely dating from the late 13th–14th centuries and associated with the Palaiologan dynasty, it is one of the best-preserved Byzantine secular buildings in the city. The structure features characteristic brick-and-stone masonry, blind arcades, ornate window frames and multi-level halls; interior fragments of wall painting and carved stone elements survive. Over centuries the complex saw diverse uses under Ottoman rule, reflecting the layers of Istanbul’s urban history. Its cultural significance derives from its architectural quality, its role within the defensive and ceremonial landscape of late Byzantium, and its testimony to continuous historical transformations in the metropolis.
