Topkapı Palace, situated on the Sarayburnu promontory overlooking the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn, was commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in the mid‑15th century. For centuries it served as the primary administrative centre and imperial residence of the Ottoman sultans, accumulating vast collections of art, calligraphy, manuscripts, ceremonial objects and sacred Islamic relics. Notable sections include the sprawling courtyards, the Imperial Treasury with famous jewels and daggers, the Harem complex, the imperial kitchens and the council chambers. The palace exemplifies Ottoman court architecture and reflects layers of historical change as successive rulers enlarged and reworked its spaces. Today it is preserved as a museum and forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble, presenting interpretive displays of imperial life. The site maintains regular visiting hours, charges admission with separate arrangements for some sections, and provides accessibility accommodations for visitors.
