Kaminarimon (雷門) is the outer gate of Sensō-ji, the historic Buddhist temple in Asakusa, Tokyo. First constructed in the tenth century and repeatedly rebuilt after fires and conflicts, the present gate dates from 1960 and was reconstructed with support from industrialist Konosuke Matsushita. The gate is famed for its monumental red lantern and the flanking statues of Raijin and Fujin, gods of thunder and wind, which together express religious symbolism and local folklore. Kaminarimon marks the beginning of the Nakamise approach, a traditional shopping street offering crafts and foods that reflect Edo‑period heritage. As an enduring emblem of Asakusa, the gate plays a visible role in major festivals and cultural events and remains a focal point for appreciating the religious, social and historic layers of the neighborhood.
