The Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, is located in Mitropoleos Square. Construction began in 1842 and was completed in 1862, designed in a cross-in-square style with a dome. The cathedral has significant historical value, serving as the main church for various important religious ceremonies, including royal weddings and funerals. Following earthquake damage in 1999, extensive restoration work took place, and the cathedral reopened in 2016. Visitors can explore its stunning frescoes and architectural elements, as well as see the relics of Saint Gregory V and Saint Philothei. The cathedral is accessible via the Syntagma and Monastiraki metro stations, and admission is free.
