Riva Kalesi is a small medieval fortification located in the village of Riva (Çayağzı) on Istanbul’s northern shore where the Riva River meets the Black Sea. Its masonry and layout reflect multiple phases of construction and repair, with origins commonly attributed to Byzantine coastal defenses and later adaptations during Genoese and Ottoman periods. Historically the site formed part of a network of small forts guarding the approaches between Bosphorus and Black Sea routes, and it retains local cultural significance as a landmark tied to maritime and rural life. Key attractions are the surviving stone walls and tower fragments, panoramic coastal and river views, and the surrounding landscape that illustrates historic settlement patterns. Access involves a short walk from the village and uneven terrain; facilities are limited and the site has restricted accessibility for mobility‑impaired visitors.
