The High Line, Chelsea District, Manhattan, New York County, City of New York, New York, United States

The High Line is an elevated linear park on Manhattan’s West Side built on a preserved 1930s freight rail viaduct. Converted through a community‑led preservation effort and opened in phases beginning in 2009, it is a celebrated example of adaptive reuse and contemporary landscape design by teams including James Corner Field Operations, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, with planting concepts by Piet Oudolf. Extending roughly from Gansevoort Street toward 34th Street through Chelsea and Hudson Yards, the park features sculptural plantings, rotating public art, engineered viewing platforms and framed views of the city and Hudson River. Its cultural significance lies in urban regeneration, community activism and the integration of art, ecology and design. The High Line is publicly accessible with no general admission fee, operates seasonally with variable hours, and provides multiple ADA‑accessible entrances and amenities to accommodate visitors with disabilities.
