The Taras Shevchenko Monument in Ottawa is a significant cultural and historical landmark dedicated to the celebrated Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko. Unveiled on June 26, 2011, the monument is located at the Saint John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Shrine in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Designed by renowned sculptor Leo Mol, the monument features a central figure of a young Shevchenko, accompanied by three bas-relief sculptures representing themes from his poetry. These include figures from his epic poem "Haydamaky," a depiction of "Kateryna" with her child, and "Banduryst," reflecting Ukrainian cultural elements. The monument stands approximately 8.5 meters high, with the central figure measuring 3 meters and weighing 630 kg. It is crafted from nearly 90,000 kg of Stanstead grey granite sourced from Quebec. The unveiling ceremony coincided with the 120th anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada, 20 years of Ukrainian independence, and the 150th anniversary of Shevchenko's death. The event included a tree planting ceremony with soil brought from Kaniv, Ukraine, further emphasizing the connection between the monument and Ukrainian heritage. Visitors to the monument can appreciate not only its artistic and architectural beauty but also its role in commemorating the contributions of Ukrainian culture to Canadian society.
