Chiesa di San Matteo, located in the historic center of Lecce, is a stunning example of Roman Baroque architecture. Built between 1667 and 1700 by architect Achille Larducci, it replaced a 15th-century chapel dedicated to Saint Matthew. The church features a striking façade characterized by convex and concave lines, reminiscent of Borromini's work. Inside, visitors can admire a unique elliptical nave adorned with twelve statues of the Apostles and several richly decorated altars typical of the local baroque style. The church is an active place of worship and also hosts the parish of Santa Maria della Luce. It is recommended to check the visiting hours in advance as the church may close during services. Admission is usually free, but donations are appreciated. The site is accessible to all visitors.
